The precursor of woven carpets or those knotted on a loom – a complex machine introduced thousands of years later – felt was created by treating the wool with hot water, then beating it at length until it became a blanket.
Felt was an essential element for the nomads as it provided thermal insulation and was light and easy to transport.
The most ancient felts date back to the third millennium BC, but it is probable that the felting technique was developed before the agricultural revolution, about 15,000 years ago.
Thus felts were the first form of human creativity and we can include them among the first works of art.
