ALA-KYIZ FELTS

Kyrgyzstan | Wool | Early 20th Century

Felt is the most ancient form of carpet, its ancestor. Before the invention of the loom, man used rugs made of pressed wool. He would take advantage of the natural felting process, using boiling water. A simple design in dyed wool would be arranged on the floor, and then be pressed onto a neutral base. The most important emblem, since the beginning of humanity, was the ram horn, a fertility symbol bound to the Mother Earth cult.
